Topical Testosterone (Gel/Cream) Treatment Plan
OVERVIEW:
This treatment plan outlines the application, dosage, expected benefits, and potential side effects of topical testosterone gel or cream for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Please read this plan carefully, along with the manufacturer’s information provided with your medication, for complete details regarding precautions, interactions, and other important safety information.
Topical therapy provides a non-invasive alternative to injections and is applied daily for consistent hormone delivery.
INSTRUCTIONS:
For testosterone replacement therapy, you have been prescribed:
Topical testosterone gel or cream, to be applied once daily unless otherwise directed by your provider.
General guidance:
- Apply to clean, dry, intact skin (commonly shoulders, upper arms, or thighs, depending on product instructions)
- Use the exact prescribed amount (pump or measured dose)
- Spread evenly and allow the medication to dry completely before dressing
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after application
- Avoid showering, swimming, or sweating heavily for at least 2–4 hours after application
- Rotate application sites as recommended
Avoid contact between the application site and others until the medication has fully dried. Cover the area with clothing if there is a risk of skin-to-skin transfer.
Your provider will determine your dose and adjust based on lab results and clinical response. Regular monitoring is required.
HOW TOPICAL TESTOSTERONE WORKS:
Testosterone is absorbed through the skin and enters the bloodstream, helping restore levels to a normal range.
Topical testosterone therapy may help:
- Improve energy and reduce fatigue
- Increase libido and sexual function
- Support muscle mass and strength
- Improve mood and mental clarity
- Support overall metabolic and bone health
Because it is applied daily, topical testosterone can provide steady hormone levels when used consistently.
IMPORTANT NOTES REGARDING YOUR TREATMENT:
- Use only as prescribed. Do not apply more than directed.
- Avoid transferring testosterone to others. Accidental exposure (especially to women and children) can cause unwanted hormonal effects.
- Wash the application site before any anticipated skin-to-skin contact.
- Common side effects may include skin irritation at the application site, acne, or increased hair growth.
- Testosterone therapy may increase red blood cell levels and affect cholesterol or hormone balance. Regular lab monitoring is required.
- Testosterone may suppress natural hormone production and reduce fertility.
- Seek medical care if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, leg swelling, severe headaches, or signs of allergic reaction.
- Do not apply to broken or irritated skin.
