Stool Softeners
OVERVIEW:
This treatment plan explains how to use stool softeners to help prevent constipation and make bowel movements easier. Stool softeners can reduce straining and discomfort, which is especially helpful if you have hemorrhoids or are recovering from a procedure. Please follow the instructions below and any guidance from your healthcare provider.
INSTRUCTIONS:
For stool softening and constipation relief, take:
1 capsule (100 mg), orally, once a day; with plenty of water.
Stool softeners help draw water into the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. This can reduce straining, pressure, and discomfort during bowel movements.
Results usually occur within 12–72 hours. For best results, take this medication consistently and drink plenty of fluids.
IMPORTANT NOTES REGARDING YOUR TREATMENT:
- Take this medication exactly as directed
- Do not use stool softeners for long periods of time
- Contact your healthcare provider if constipation lasts more than a week
- Drink plenty of water to help the medication work effectively.
- Stool softeners are usually meant for short-term use.
- Contact your healthcare provider if you develop abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting.
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS:
This medication may contain:
- Docusate sodium or docusate calcium
Do not take this medication if you are allergic to these ingredients.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:
Stool softeners are generally well tolerated. Mild side effects may include:
- Stomach discomfort or cramping
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
If side effects become severe or do not improve, stop taking the medication and contact your healthcare provider.
